An Overmedicated Generation Of Foodies

Modern medicine is the fabric of our current society. We are heavily reliant on the thought that there is a medicine to back up pretty much whatever is going on with our bodies. We see medicine as a miracle solution to any problem our bodies may have. It is one of the many reasons COIVD-19 has been so scary to us; the fact that we don’t have a vaccine or a fixed treatment method.

However, this reliance has pushed us as a people to lose out on the belief we have in our bodies. It has pushed us to believe that our wellness is dependent on the number of vitamins we take, the powders we add to our smoothies, and the numbers on our health reports. But our bodies are so much more than that. There is so much more to our wellness in how we feel.

Food is the key to changing this dependency. It is a key factor in how we grow up and just as important in sustaining that kind of health throughout life. While we are not saying you should go all Hippocrates, “Let food be thy medicine and let medicine be thy food”, but we are saying it doesn’t discredit the role of food in making medicine work. Orthorexia or a food-based wellness obsession is real and that is not the goal.

Take on the role of a scientist that is researching your own body. Look to find a balance between what is good for your body and have enough before it becomes toooooooo good. A good example of this is Ayurveda, where to treat illness, there are very specific dietary regimes alongside the medicine component. Here are some rules of thumb you can follow to take care of your body and your mind.

Eat Naturally Intelligent Foods:

Foods that are filled with pesticides and preservatives are obviously not smart decisions. Foods that are organic may not have more nutrients inside them, but they don’t have all the problematic substances on the outside. Foods that are less processed and closer to their natural form are always better. These are all things that intuitively make sense and we should remember that.

Think About What You Digest:

Your body tells you what you cannot eat. You just need to listen. A large number of us are lactose intolerant or cannot fully digest certain foods. We are just too stubborn to listen because we either think that something that healthy or that tasty cannot be bad for us. Figure out what makes your body feel less good and learn how to change that.

Be Mindful about your Eating Habits:

Are you eating too fast, too often, or too little? Are you mad when you are eating your food? Think about how you are consuming your food and the thoughts that you are ingesting with that food. It all adds up to how your body will feel at the end of the day.

These are just three small steps on the journey of wellness that food can take you on and away from an overdependence on medicine.
