Goop Lab and Other Unproven Health Trends of the 2010s

Updated: Aug 15, 2020

There are a few things I want to preface this blog by saying; Gwyneth Paltrow is the definition of ultra-glam and ultra-chic. In my opinion, everything she does on ‘The Goop Lab’ is so outlandish it falls into these two categories as well. In any case, I am super glad she has acknowledged that a medical professional should be contacted before participating in any of her “wellness methods”

The 2010s were full of health and wellness trends. They were an easy sell in the last decade with the growth of social media and the absolute need people felt to stay healthy, fit, and most importantly on-trend. As the world and ongoing circumstances make us feel worse here are some of the many things people have tried in the pursuit of wellness. Whether that was a yoni steaming (yoni as in the same one from yoni puja in Netflix’s Too Hot To Handle) as explained by Goop, activated charcoal everything or crystals and juice cleanses to purify your body we have all tried out some trend or the other. Here are some of the most popular ones that just made no sense to us. And here is to hope that the 2020s bring better wellness practices for us all.

1. Gut Health Trends

Gut health is super important to overall wellness. A happy gut equated to better digestion, better skin ad an overall better temperament. While in the 2010’s we discovered foods that would do that for us we slowly went overboard into the world of prebiotics and probiotics. With kombucha, yogurt, and more there were trendy foods that really helped, but this trend took them well out of moderation. Having pre and probiotics is important, but so is having them in the right quantities. Too many probiotics can cause a weakened immune system, nausea, and bloating. So next time remember one kombucha is fine, not four liters of kombucha.

2. All of the Diets

If you were eating during the 2010’s I can almost certainly tell you that your food at some point or another were either dictated by one of the many diet fads doing around during these years. Some of the most famous ones during this period were the Juice Cleanse, Keto, Paleo, Whole30, Intermittent Fasting, and GM. All these diets promised a healthier body and better mental capacity. While each and every one of these diets did provide almost instant weight loss results, their side-effects remained overlooked. For example, Keto that is still going strong was disproved as viable by the same person who created the diet. These were a real wake-up call to move from fad weight-loss experiments to more sustainable lifestyle changes such as Veganism and smaller more frequent meals.

3. Crystals

Crystals had the most major glow-up over the last 10 years for being already beautiful. They went from hippie-dippy objects and home décor to absolute wellness essentials. All of a sudden you were supposed to sleep with certain crystals, put some others on your face, and others in your water. They were absolutely everywhere. Even GP made sure that they had a special place in her Goop Lab. However, there is very little evidence to prove the actual energy direction capabilities of many of these stones. But they remain unbelievably pretty and make people happy, so I guess what’s not to love other than the price tag.

4. Haldi to solve EVERYTHING

Ever heard of the famous, anti-inflammatory golden latte that took the western world by storm? Known for its great taste (in moderation) and immense health benefits, that was the west discovering the benefits of haldi. While haldi truly is an amazing food in terms of its innumerable benefits, like anything on this list it needs to be consumed and used in moderation. Not to mention haldi also has the ability to generate heat within the human body, so make sure you're not eating it by the spoonful like those girls on Instagram.

5. Fitbits, step counting, and athleisure

While all the trendy methods of the last 10 years may not have been the most effective. It can be said that without a doubt, the 2010s made everyone want to achieve fitness goals for themselves. Alongside those goals have developed tools and fashion to make it better. There came fitbits and other step-counting tools that took stock of every action we did throughout the day and athleisure to look the part we were trying to play. While they didn’t really promote specific physical activity, they made people perceive themselves as healthier by participating in them. There is nothing an Rs.6000 pair of leggings can’t help you do better.

Let us know some of the “health” trends you have participated in over the last decade and any cool experiences you may have had with them.
